The Big Two
GMA pallet (North America) — 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm). The dominant footprint in US retail and LTL. Typical wood construction: ~5.5–6 in tall, 37–48 lb tare, dynamic (forklift-moving) capacity ~2,500 lb, racked capacity lower and rack-dependent. If your cargo enters US retail distribution, this is almost certainly the required footprint.
EUR/EPAL pallet (Europe) — 1200 × 800 mm (47.2 × 31.5 in). The EPAL-certified exchange pallet: 144 mm tall, ~25 kg tare, safe working load 1,500 kg. Its 800 mm width is designed around European truck beds (2 × 1,200 or 3 × 800 across a 2.44 m trailer). EPAL pallets are stamped and exchangeable — a non-certified "Euro-size" pallet is the same rectangle without the exchange value.

- Exporting to the US: GMA 48 × 40. US warehouses' racking, pallet jacks, and slip sheets assume it.
- Exporting to the EU: EUR 1200 × 800 for anything entering exchange networks; 1200 × 1000 is common for ocean freight because it cubes containers slightly better.

Choosing a Standard Pallet Size: Two Practitioner Scenarios
Scenario 1 — EU importer, EUR vs GMA. You're bringing 600 cartons of 40 × 30 × 25 cm at 8 kg each from Asia into a German DC that accepts either footprint, with a 180 cm stack limit. On paper the GMA wins per pallet: its layer takes 9 cartons against the EUR's 8 (compare the GMA arrangement with the EUR arrangement — same carton, same limits). Six layers each gives 54 per GMA pallet vs 48 per EUR pallet. But the container flips the result: a 40ft takes 25 EUR pallets against 20–21 GMA, so the EUR plan floors about 1,200 cartons per container against roughly 1,130 on GMA — and the EUR pallets enter the German exchange pool instead of becoming disposal cost. Unless the receiving warehouse demands GMA, the "smaller" pallet ships more.
Scenario 2 — one product, two markets. A shipper splitting production between US and EU customers sometimes standardizes on the 1200 × 1000 mm industrial footprint: close enough to GMA (1219 × 1016) that most US racking accepts it, and it stows in containers at the same 20–21 per 40ft count. The trade-offs: it's outside the EPAL 1 exchange system, and some automated US facilities reject anything that isn't exactly 48 × 40. Ask both destinations before committing — a pallet spec is cheap to confirm and expensive to re-palletize.
Wood, Plastic, or Presswood?
- Wood (stringer or block): cheapest, repairable, ~40 lb. Must be ISPM-15 heat-treated (HT stamp, under the International Plant Protection Convention rules) for international shipment — untreated wood gets cargo quarantined at many borders.
- Plastic: 15–25 lb, no ISPM-15 requirement, hygienic (pharma/food); cost 3–5× wood. Watch racked load ratings — many plastic pallets rate far lower in racking than on the floor.
- Presswood / molded: ISPM-15 exempt, nestable, ~30 lb, cheap; lower stiffness — best for one-way export of moderate loads.
Load Ratings, Correctly Read
Three different numbers, often confused:
- Static: pallet sitting on flat ground, evenly loaded — the biggest, least useful figure.
- Dynamic: while carried by forklift or pallet jack — usually about half of static.
- Racked: supported only at the edges in beam racking — the smallest, and the one that fails catastrophically when exceeded.

Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money
- Quoting cargo dimensions without the pallet. The pallet adds roughly 15 cm of height and 20–35 kg of weight to every unit load. Forget it and your volumetric and density numbers are wrong — which means a surprise on the invoice when the carrier re-measures. - Untreated wood at the border. A missing HT stamp can mean fumigation, re-palletizing, or return of the entire consignment at destination — typically days of delay plus handling charges that dwarf the price difference of compliant pallets.
- Reading the static rating as the racked rating. A pallet advertised at "2,800 kg" static may rack at well under half that. Overloaded beam racking is a collapse risk, and warehouses will refuse loads that exceed their rack spec.
- Buying "Euro-size" instead of EPAL for an exchange lane. The rectangle is identical, but uncertified pallets are rejected from exchange pools — you pay full pallet price on every trip instead of swapping.
